AN ODE TO OPENING CREDITS

Oh, the power of the opening credits! From the snaps in The Addams Family to a freefall down Madison Ave in Mad Men to the gritty drive from the city to the suburbs in The Sopranos to getting splashed by a city bus while wearing a tutu in Sex and the City, some TV openers are burned in our brains.

In a good way!

Others worm their way into our ears — can you even hear “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” and not think of Cheers? Or “I’ll Be There For You” and not think of Friends? Or “With a Little Help From My Friends” and not think of The Wonder Years?

(The answer is no.)

The best openers do 5 things well:

  1. Evoke a mood

  2. Tell a story

  3. Sing a catchy song

  4. Have great editing

  5. Change every week or season
